Cape Town  A CPUT staff bus was engulfed in fire on Monday while the Vice-Chancellor was addressing staff and students of the institution over ongoing protests regarding substandard hostel facilities.

Earlier this week, students of the Mountain House Residence protested at the district six campus to raise their concerns about poor  residence facilitiesThe students have been experiencing intermittent power cuts from 6 pm almost daily. For the past two months, students have complained that only ice-cold water is available in baths within the premises. Some students stated that they had missed classes because they could not take proper showers and were afraid their bodies would give off a foul odour.

One student said they had to visit a friend in the neighbouring residence to cook and bath. They complained that they are also forced to stay behind at campus until late to access the Wi-Fi.

There were also complaints about cracking walls in some rooms and wild shakings when the city experiences windy days. The Vice Chancellor of the CPUT will visit the residence later today.
